Safer Alternatives

Most kitchen knives are designed with pointed tips, yet for many everyday tasks that point is unnecessary.

Let’s Be Blunt CIC promotes safer alternatives to pointed kitchen knives as a practical, preventative step to reduce risk and harm in everyday environments.

This movement is about recognising that design matters - and that small changes can reduce risk without removing function.

Why this pledge matters

Why Knife Design Matters

Pointed knife tips are more likely to cause serious injury, particularly in moments of impulsivity, crisis, or dysregulation. Research and lived experience show that when a blade has a pointed tip, the potential for severe harm increases.

What do we mean by safer alternatives?

Safer alternatives include kitchen knives designed with rounded tips, while retaining a sharp cutting edge.

These knives:

  • Perform everyday kitchen tasks effectively

  • Reduce the likelihood of penetrating injuries

  • Lower the risk of severe harm if misused

  • Support safer homes, workplaces and shared spaces

Who are safer alternatives for?

  • Safer knife choices can be particularly relevant in:

  • Family homes

  • Shared accommodation

  • Supported housing

  • Educational settings

  • Care settings

  • Workplaces and community kitchens

An important note

Safer alternatives are not a single solution to knife crime or knife harm. They are one part of a wider puzzle, alongside education, awareness, support and community-led change.

No single action prevents harm on its own - it’s how the pieces come together that creates lasting change.
